Golden Globes Fashion 2012

Angelina Jolie tried to melt us with her eyes. Smells like Golden Globes fashion.

White, red and pinky-flesh were the gown hues du jour — and there were more mermaid hemlines than at a boondocks beauty pageant. But, ultimately, there were few stand-out trends on the red carpet at tonight's Golden Globe Awards. Which we think is a great thing. It was only a couple of years ago that we were bitching about how homogenous and femme-bot-ish starlets looked on the red carpet.

We were actually impressed with how far out on a limb some of Hollywood's fashion plates went (see Michelle Williams and, well, Sarah Michelle Gellar.) Thataway, girls!

Scroll down for our picks and pans from the evening.

THE BEST

From left to right, top to bottom: Emma Stone killing it Grecian style in Lanvin; Clare Danes in modern-feeling J. Mendel; Evan Rachel Wood, fit to fly in feathery Premiere Gucci; Sarah Michelle Gellar in tie-dye Monique Lhullier; Selma Hayek in disco-y Gucci; Michelle Williams in a really rad Jason Wu dress that Juliana Rancic will undoubtedly call "matronly" on "Fashion Police"; Julie Bowen in romantic Reem Acra; Elle "The Body" McPherson in slinky Zac Posen; Charlize Theron in floaty Dior Couture.

THE WORST

Clockwise from top, left: Lea Michele channeling an '80s Vegas showgirl in Marchesa; Tilda Swinton in a beautiful Haider Ackermann getup ruined by its hideous color; Reese Witherspoon looking like a NASCAR hostess in Zac Posen; Angelina Jolie wearing zero blush, zero cheer and an eyesore of a Versace dress; Little Natalie Portman being eaten alive by a Lanvin gown; The always-surly-in-interviews Amanda Peet, taking home the booby prize of the evening in tiered Marc Jacobs.

THE REST

From right to left, from the top: Helen Mirren in stately Badgley Mischka; Nicole Kidman in too-tight Versace; Kristen Wiig in Seventies-inspired Naeem Khan dress; Melissa McCarthy in a pretty Badgely Mischka gown; Zooey Deschanel in cute Prada; Nicole Richie in Julien MacDonald; a wan-looking Rooney Mara in Peter Copping for Nina Ricci; Tina Fey in Oscar de la Renta; Kate Winslet in a "meh" Jenny Packham number.
