Brick and mortar be damned: Ex-Vogue staffer launches on-line vintage emporium

Screen shot 2010-03-15 at 5.48.44 PMIf there is one awesome thing about the great recession, it’s the rate of budding entrepreneurs making their way on to the business landscape. Enter L.A.-based former Vogue staffer Brenna Egan, whose new on-line vintage boutique, Chic and You Shall Find, just launched today.

Screen shot 2010-03-15 at 5.12.10 PM

The e-tailer carries goods for girls only, including dresses, bottoms, tops, accessories and jackets mostly priced under $100. The selection is on-trend, with a lot of the early 70s, flowing folsky garb that is sure to become summer’s staple (in my closet, at least). Not included in the largely label-less lineup (save for an area dubbed “collection” which features names such as Gucci and Escada) are the sequined Blanche Deveroux-style looks that have become almost nauseatingly abundant at vintage stores as of late.

Sure, clicking lacks the same something-something as wandering the Silver Lake Vintage fair on a Saturday. But Chic and You Shall Find has found a nice, solid footing in the oft overcrowded world of on-line vintage. I’m excited to see what new pieces Egan adds next.

Photos: Left, a fuzzy coat from Egan’s site that channels Pendelton x Opening Ceremony for just $58. Right, a breezy blue dress I really wish I was wearing at this very second.

Sad news: Sirens & Sailors closes their Echo Park boutique

2156560.28Well that sucks. After ten years in business, Sirens & Sailors, Jennifer Phillips‘ cute-as-can-be Echo Park shop, has closed. She expanded in 2004, taking over the Victorian-style bungalow next door, but an e-mail announcing the closure says: “Jenny needs a break for about a year and who knows what will come…..”

But the good news is that the store’s e-commerce site is still up and running.

Best of luck, Jenny. We’re excited to see what you do next!

I’m cuckoo for corduroy: Levi’s for Opening Ceremony vs. Steven Alan’s skirt

Screen shot 2010-02-24 at 3.36.32 PMEach day, while making my way home down Hillhurst Avenue in Los Feliz, I look through the window ofScreen shot 2010-02-24 at 3.39.10 PM the Steven Alan Annex store and say (yes, even when alone), “Holy crap, that corduroy skirt is cute.”

And wouldn’t you know that the high waisted number happens to be on sale — only $98 from its standard $158 price tag. Though now I can’t decide between said skirt or a pair of bright yellow cord shorts from the just launched Levi’s for Opening Ceremony collection. priced at $125, the shorts’ vibrant hue seems more relevant as a spring/summer piece when compared to the skirt’s more drab (but practical!) navy, olive, tan and gray offerings.

Damn decisions. Which piece would you guys buy??

Seen in Stores: Punky Plaid Pajama Pants

Screen shot 2009-11-23 at 5.01.41 PM

Plaid pajama pants hold a special place in my heart. The soft, snuggly bottoms are what I used to wear to sleepovers and summer camp, and nary a seventh-grade weekend went by that I didn’t leave a Bar or Bat Mitzvah with a pair confirming that I did, in fact, Rock With Rachel.

Fast forward to last weekend when I meandered in to Ron Herman at Fred Segal on Melrose, where an entire wall was devoted to the plaid pajama

pants of my youth. Only these babies were by Stevan Alan. And on mannequins, the pants were paired with jean jackets and Dr. Martens for an early 90s nod to punk–not a comfy option for the recess kickball court.

As I thought about all the places my drawstring delights could take me, I checked out the price tag. $135. Uh, I don’t remember my University of Michigan flannels costing that much.

But I’m still way into the idea of wearing pajamas in public without judgement (not to mention the geniusness of that drawstring when Cecconi’s truffle spaghetti comes calling). So I did some digging and found much cheaper options for those of us that buy our white T-shirts in a 3-pack from Target.

Pair your pants with heels or boots so you don’t look like you actually stumbled out of bed. Or out of a Bar Mitzvah.

Burberry Celebrates Spring 2010 With a Flapper-Worthy Story

IMG_0787Last night, the Burberry boutique in Beverly Hills hosted a small cocktail gathering to showcase their63h4vtxspring collection and celebrate The Bolter, author Frances Osborne’s biography of her great-grandmother, scandalous Jazz Age socialite Idina Sackville.

The most eye catching piece of the evening wasn’t Burberry’s short, straight-off-the-runway silver sequined trench coat (the only one currently in North America, apparently). But instead a tid-bit inside The Bolter’s book jacket that said Sackville was muse to famed courtier Edward Molyneux and helped put the wraparound dress that became synonymous with Art Deco fashion on the map.

HuffPo has a photo gallery of Sackville’s style complete with captions by Osborne.

I wouldn’t mind seeing that silver coat hanging in my closet, but seeing Molyneux’ 1938 black crepe v-neck there instead (right) would leave me speechless.
