Shorts Story
Shopping for shorts can be a scary pursuit. In addition to the lumps and bumps that form our own insecurities, shorts are just that — short. They're also tight, uncomfortable and tend to ride up in places we didn't know we had. But this season, with shorts showing up everywhere from the beach to the red carpet, there is no reason why shorts shopping should be scarier than, say, finding affordable health insurance.
We found pairs that work for various body types and occasions. Some are painless. Some are sort of not. But hey, it never hurt anyone to have a summer goal.

What: Rag & Bone Hampton shorts, $230.
Why we love them: These front-pleated, silk shorties are perfect for a plethora of summer activities. With a tucked-in tee and flat sandals they work for a daytime barbeque. Add some heels, jewelry and a whispy blouse and you have an after dark ensemble. And with a slightly structured, androgynous feel, we'd wear these into fall, too.
Fear factor: Not scary at all. These shorts are baggy and fall to mid-thigh, a most flattering point. And because they're nude, these suckers will make your legs look endless — not a bad bonus if we do say so ourselves.
Available at Confederacy, 4661 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles. 323-913-3040. shopconfederacy.com

What: Paige Premium Denim Jimmy Jimmy Short, $130.
Why we love them: These basic jean shorts are the stuff of summertime gold. Just like the cheap fro yo near our house, these shorts are worth reaching for every single day. They're casual but versatile and can be paired with just about anything — tank tops, T-shirts and casual blouses, too. And while we're into denim that looks like it survived a bombing, sometimes it is indeed nice to have a more polished pair.
Fear factor: Sure, they're a little short. But they're more forgiving than a pair of Daisy Dukes. Plus, they have some stretch which always helps fix body woes. Buy them a couple sizes too big and add a belt for more room in the thighs.
Available at Planet Blue, 409 North Beverly Dr., Beverly Hills. (310) 385-0557. shopplanetblue.com

What: Joie Gavin Cargo Pants, $158.
Why we love them: This season, it's all about looking like you live at Fort Bragg. And these long cargo shorts fit the bill. Ideally, these would be limited to neighborhood lunch dates in your favorite pair of Havianas. But because of their current trendiness, the flip flops can be traded for a pair of cool, stacked wood heels to dress these babies up. Plus, they're ultra comfy without being gym shorts. Score.
Fear factor: Nothing to fear here. These cargo shorts are long, roomy and absolutely perfect for those days when your legs feel like the trunk of a Redwood.
